As a visually impaired person I often find myself at the crossroads of life unsure what the future will look like for me.  It was the start of the year 2017 where I was working for my Father in the excavation business.  Believe it or not it was a rough occupation, long hours, hard work, and we worked when it rained or shined.  My last job I was working in the middle of a major windstorm, leveling stone for a driveway and I’ll never forget that day because it was my last day.  I was tomahawked by a sheet of plywood right into my left shoulder where it fractured my collarbone. It hit me like a freight train, and I went down. As I was  laying on my back and thinking to myself, How could I be here? Why am I here? In other words, I said this  is rock bottom for me.  So, I quit that job and I decided to move forward with my life. A new company found me and they wanted me to start as soon as they opened their building in the town where I was living.  It felt like the stars were lining up for me.  I couldn’t drive to my job so I had to find a place that was close enough where I could afford everyday transportation or even walk if I had to.  It’s not an easy search to find a place that meets your needs.  IBVI (Industries for the blind and visually impaired ) found me and hired me as a Tool Kitter for the VSECK (Vertical Skills Electrician Construction Kits)  Program.  I started my first day with no one having any idea who I  was and what I was suppose to be doing.  I then met my mentor, Tim, who has trained me to be the best tool kitter on the floor and later help me become the Production lead which then led me to becoming  The Production Supervisor.  To this day I always hold myself to the highest level of working as hard as I can to accomplish anything that stood in my way.  It is hard to be a supervisor because now I oversee all of the projects and all the employees that I have to help  organize and help everyone around me do great things. Its nice to know That  a lot of things get done with me around. because if I’m not around  then nothing would get done.  So as a supervisor  it makes the work flow  steady and everyone works hard.    I, yet must climb higher and higher. I want to set an example of myself to show the world that just because I am visually impaired doesn’t mean that my career has to be limited. Later on as I grew my experience and learned the trade of hard work I became a founder of the BVI Chamber with Kevin Fortune. That was the best decision in my life I have made for myself  I currently serve as Vice-President of the BVI chamber of Commerce board of Directors..  I am my own person, and the sky is the limit.  I owe it to this place to remind me every day that nothing is impossible.  It’s all about hard work and dedication to succeed in this life.  My name is Easton Kons, and I am known as “The Future”.
